Shell Energy

Shell Energy Supplier Snapshot

Who are Shell Energy?

Shell Energy is not one of the Big 6 energy suppliers – not yet anyway. Shell Energy was born from the acquisition of First Utility by the Shell Group and now sits within Shell’s New Energies Division. Although Shell Energy currently has less than 1 million customer accounts – a number that is expected to grow rapidly – it is part of the Shell group, a global group of energy and petrochemical companies with 86,000 employees in more than 70 countries and net assets of over 203 billion US dollars. In a word, it’s BIG.

What products and services does Shell Energy offer?

Shell Energy offers a range of tariffs for domestic consumers. Shell Energy tariffs all come with 100% renewable electricity as standard together with exclusive rewards with Shell Go+. This includes 3% off fuel at Shell petrol stations (up to a maximum of 60 litres per month).

Their current product range includes;

  • Fixed – a discounted fixed rate online energy tariff with no exit penalty. You do not even need to sign up for a smart meter to get these tariffs.
  • Fixed plus Smart – a fixed rate energy tariff with a requirement to get a smart meter installed. Exit penalty applies.
  • Fixed plus Nest Thermostat E –a fixed rate tariffs that includes a free Nest Thermostat E. Exit penalty applies.
  • Flexible – Shell Energy standard variable rate tariff with no exit penalty. This tariff is subject to the Energy Price Cap with pricing reviewed every 6 months.

Does Shell Energy offer renewable energy tariffs?

Yes it does.

From 25 March 2019, when Shell rebranded First Utility as Shell Energy, it switched all of its existing customers onto 100% renewable electricity. All new tariffs now come with 100% renewable electricity as standard. You can review their Fuel Mix Disclosue here.

Can I get a smart meter from Shell Energy?

Yes you can.

Some tariffs, such as the Fixed Plus Smart range, are designed to attract customers who want to have a smart installed. However, any Shell Energy customer can request a free smart meter installation. In 2017 Shell Energy installed around 290,000 smart meters and so are well on the way to meeting their smart meter installation obligations.

What are Shell Energy financials like?

Shell Energy is part of the Shell Group, one of the largest diversified energy companies in the world. At end 2018, the group had net assets of over 200 billion US dollars.

It probably goes without saying but is worth pointing out nevertheless that, given the financial strength of the group, there is negligible financial risk to being a customer on supply with Shell Energy.
